Yoreh Deah is a four-year halacha b’iyun track. The main topics are:

Yoreh Deah B’Iyun
Work through the sources in Gemara, uncovering the foundational sources of the halachos we practice. Then, go through rishonim, acharonim, contemporary poskim, and finally – today’s practical applications of halacha.

Hilchos Basar Bechalav
Covers the Torah and Rabbinic prohibitions of meat and milk, including the laws of cooking, eating, and deriving benefit. The study explores core principles such as nat bar nat, the status of utensils, sharp foods, waiting times between meat and milk, and issues of maris ayin.
Practical examples include:
- What if a drop of milk spills onto my chulent pot?
- If vegetables are cooked in a meat pot, may I eat them together with a glass of milk?
- If I eat an onion cut with a meat knife, must I wait six hours before drinking milk?
- May I drink coffee with non-dairy creamer together with meat, or is there a concern of appearance?
Hilchos Hechsher Keilim
Covers the principles of kashering utensils: when vessels require koshering, which method must be used (hagalah – boiling, or libun – burning), and differences between materials such as metal, earthenware, glass, and plastic. Also addresses unique cases like knives, handles, and storage containers.
Practical examples include:
- What is the status of china or other earthenware dishes?
- Must glass dishes be kashered, and how?
- When is hagalah sufficient and when is libun required?
- How are knives or utensils with rust or dirt kashered?
Hilchos Tevilas Keilim
Focuses on the mitzvah of immersing utensils acquired from a non-Jew before using them. Includes which materials require tevilah, when to recite a blessing, and practical cases such as disposable utensils, electrical appliances, or items borrowed, rented, or bought through partnership.
Practical examples include:
- If I buy used dishes from a non-Jew, must I tovel them?
- Do glass, plastic, or disposable utensils require immersion?
- May utensils be immersed on Shabbos or Yom Tov?
- What about hotel or restaurant dishes that were not immersed?
- What is the solution for electrical appliances that cannot be immersed?
Hilchos Taaruvos
Covers the halachos of mixtures of issur v’heter: ta’aroves min b’mino and she’eino mino, the rules of bitul b’shishim, and cases where issur is not nullified even in a thousand. Also studied are noten ta’am l’fegam, beriah and insects, and practical questions such as medicines with non-kosher ingredients.
Practical examples include:
- What is the difference between min b’mino and she’eino mino?
- Are non-kosher medicines permitted when needed?
- When do we apply noten ta’am l’fegam to permit a mixture?
- What is the halacha of beriah (a whole entity, such as an insect)?
- How does bitul b’shishim work in practice?
- Which things are never nullified, even in a thousand?
Hilchos Niddah
Covers the halachos of niddah and taharah: when a woman becomes a niddah, the laws of vesetos, shivah nekiyim, tevilah in the mikveh, and the harchakos between husband and wife. Also studied are the halachos of stains (ketamim)—which ones render a woman a niddah and which do not—as well as the halachos of a yoledes and a kallah.
Practical examples include:
- At what stage does a woman become a niddah?
- Which ketamim are permitted and which are forbidden?
- What is the importance of establishing vesetos?
- May a woman delay her tevilah?
- What constitutes a chatzitzah in the mikveh?
- May a husband drink from the same cup as his wife when she is a niddah?
Hilchos Yichud
Deals with the prohibition of yichud—a man being secluded with a woman who is forbidden to him. The halachos define when the prohibition is from the Torah and when from Chazal, what situations are considered true seclusion, and which conditions (such as an open door or the presence of others) remove the prohibition.
Practical examples include:
- May one be alone with relatives such as a sister or cousin?
- Does an open door permit yichud?
- May a man be secluded with two women?
Hilchos Aveilus
Covers the core halachos of mourning, focusing on the primary obligations and practices observed by an avel. Topics include the mitzvah of keriah and the stages of mourning (shivah, sheloshim, and yud-bet chodesh).
Practical examples include:
- When must one perform keriah?
- What activities are restricted during shivah?
- Are there differences between mourning for a parent and other relatives?
Concurrent Yoreh Deah Bekius learning
Alongside the learning b’iyun, there is also bekius learning. It covers extensive ground in practical halacha from Shulchan Aruch and Nosei Keilim with 15-min daily shiurim and weekly tests.
The bekius learning covers various topics throughout all of yoreh deah.
